Dr. Daniel Hale Williams - Pioneer in Open Heart Surgery - 1856-1931

** First doctor to ever perform successful open heart surgery in 1893.

** Born in Hollidaysburg, PA. Received M.D. degree from Chicago Medical College in 1883.

** Founded Provident Hospital in Chicago in 1891. It was the first hospital in the country open to patients of all races, with a staff of black and white doctors.

** Instrumental in the creation of forty hospitals in twenty states to serve the Black community and in the development of Freedman's Hospital in Washington, D.C.

** Only Black charter member of the American College of Surgeons (1913) and a founder of the National Medical Association (1895).
